Humanitarian Projects
Sathya Sai Baba has undertaken a number of humanitarian projects in India and thus inspired his followers for carrying out similar projects all over the world.
Medical Projects
In 2002, Sai Baba said: There are many poor and down-trodden people who are suffering for want of proper medical care. Nobody cares for them in big hospitals as they cannot afford costly treatments. In some hospitals, they are not even permitted to enter the main gate. Can there be a greater sin than this? My intention is to provide free medical care to all such poor and forlorn people.
Sathya Sai has established four hospitals, two of which are even equipped for specialized care in fields of cardiology, cardiac surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, urology, ophthalmology and other fields of medicine.
The medical care is also provided by medical camps, which bring the necessary care and medication as well as information about nutrition and hygiene to people who would never be able to access it otherwise.
All the medical care is provided free of charge.
Water Supply Projects
In many distant areas of India the people have no access to pure drinking water. They have to walk many kilometers to fetch fresh water or they use water from polluted wells, which may lead to serious health problems.
In 1994 the water supply project in Andra Pradesh was undertaken. About 15 000 volunteers participated in it and pure drinking water has been brought to about 750 villages with 900 000 inhabitants.
Service to People in Need
Sathya Sai Baba cares for people in need; be it distribution of food and clothing to the poorest, donating wheelchairs to handicapped or sewing machines to unemployed, so as they can take care of their living.
